Individual counselling is a personal opportunity to receive support and experience growth during challenging times in life. Individual counselling can help folks deal with many personal topics in life such as anxiety, depression, anger, addictions, suicidality, substance abuse, relationship challenges, parenting problems, school difficulties, career changes, trauma, and mental health issues.

Through the process of individual counselling, clients work one-to-one with a counsellor in a caring and confidential environment. Counselling allows folks to explore their feelings, beliefs, and behaviours, to work through painful incidents from the past, to identify aspects of their lives that they would like to change, to better understand themselves and others, to set personal goals, and to work toward desired change - especially toward self-compassion and self-acceptance.

what to expect during your first session

The first session is an opportunity for you to get to know your counsellor and for your counsellor to get to know you. Additionally, your counsellor will explore with you the reasons why you have come to counselling. The therapist may use a formal, structured interview, or the initial meeting may feel more like a free-flowing conversation. There will be an inquiry into any questions or presenting concerns you may have alongside exploring your story and background. This may include talking about your strengths as well as your current symptoms or struggles, and your goals for therapy.

The intention of the first session is for you to begin to make a connection with your counsellor and feel accepted, respected, and relatively comfortable in the first meeting. Not all therapists are right for every person, so use your first session to assess whether or not the counsellor you chose feels like a good fit for you.
